The main feature of a single-camera setup is that you use only one camera for the whole film or video. The director will use this setup because they will get more control over a shot. Single-camera technique is you film the scene of a person then you would cut to the other person and film them replying this would then be edited into the correct order. Using a single-camera it is much easier to film a person’s POV. A single-camera is used in commercials and mostly music video since you only need one camera. In a single camera setup you will not need all the actors at one point. You can move around and film from different angles so it will not be fixed at a point. Using a single camera setup you get more action shots for example close up, low tilt, high angle and many more.A multiple-camera setup is going to be less expensive than a single-camera setup; the director has less control of the cameras. Multiple-camera setup you will need all the actors on set and filming at the same time. You can film parts differently at times once finished it can be edited together so if one part goes wrong you can re-film it but the process is long. Multiple cameras will not move they will be set at a particular point of the screen. Single camera provides you with more freedom with the cameras so you could move it around and capture all the shots and multiple camera setups only have a set position where you film a certain position. Single camera needs to film parts over again to get the different angles using multiple cameras you don’t need to re-film the parts to capture different shots.
An advantage is the director gets more control over the shot; in contrast, the use of a single camera shot cost more money than a multiple camera shot. A single camera shot does not need all actors on set it can be filmed in parts then edited together. A disadvantage could be the time that is needed to film a project could take longer because you are using one camera. You could only film one angle but if you want multiple then you would have to film the same scene twice or even more times. A disadvantage would be the time that is wasted in post production this will affect the savings you earns while shooting the actual production. A huge difference between single camera set-ups and multiple camera set-ups is the order that they’re shot in, for example multiple camera set-ups are filmed chronologically whereas single camera set-ups mean that the shots will be shot in the order of flexibility and will be put in order during editing.
You would use a multiple camera shot for live television because you are able to switch between cameras rather than using a single camera shot it would take longer to point the camera at the correct position while it would change instantly. The technical director gets to operate the cameras allowing less control for the director. On a show like ‘This Morning’ it will need multiple cameras because it switches between sets for example the cooking with Gino to the fashion with Amanda and this is operated by the technical director. Multiple cameras set up allow you to capture all the scenes without needing to re-film each scene you can also generate faster scenes.Mostly TV dramas and comedy uses a single camera setup because you can film parts at different times these are the TV shows that use a single camera setup Scrubs, Eastenders, Ugly Betty, Merlin, Everybody Hates Chris and The office they use this so that it will save money and they do not have to necessarily film it in sequence so they can film different parts before editing it together.
You would need to move the camera all the time when topic changes for example you will need to switch the camera to the weather man while it is focused on the news reporter and only a multiple camera setup could manage the process rather than moving the cameras left and right to view the news. While using single camera you would not be able to cut to a part of the news next to the studio. While using multiple cameras the screen selection is captured so all you have to do is tell the camera director what camera and he will direct it to a certain choice.
